Piano, Voice, Guitar, Song Writing
Erik Sumner’s passion for music began at a very young age. By 6 years old he began formal piano lessons and by 6th grade was already performing original compositions and adding guitar and singing to his repertoire. He realized early this was just the beginning of a lifelong journey in the performing arts.
Upon entering college, Erik had first decided on theory & composition as his concentration until the Music Department Chair told him, “The world will miss it, if you don’t sing.” Erik quickly added a voice concentration to the mix which led him down the path to explore even more musical genres. During his college career he was exposed to opera and the beautiful legacy of sacred choral music, all of which would heavily influence his approach to composing (even in rock songs!). After graduating with a bachelors degree in Music Theory/Composition & Voice, Erik went on to pursue a Master’s Degree in Vocal performance from the prestigious New England Conservatory.
After school, Erik involved himself in an Opera outreach program, introducing children to opera by performing all over the state of Utah. This experience led him to the realization that Erik was much more interested in the “outreach” than the “opera”. Shortly thereafter, Erik began teaching rock music for keyboard, guitar, drum and bass students as well as co-directing bands to help them prepare for seasonal shows. In his 10 + years of private teaching, his unique background in broadway, rock, opera & more, has been key in helping all types of singers improve. By exposing them to time-honored operatic singing techniques he’s awakened many students to the concept that you can actually sing better, stronger and perform longer with the right technique, instead of just damaging your voice night after night.
After teaching and performing in Utah, Erik made the move to Florida. Currently Erik performs solo as well and with his band Spark Notes as a singing drummer and occasional bassist.. Erik is a soloist at St. Boniface Episcopal Church. In addition to teaching privately and enjoying a varied performance life, Erik continues to write and perform original music and inspires students to do the same.
What Students Are Saying:
“Erik is awesome! My son really looks forward to seeing him every week.”
“I met Erik when I was looking for a “coach” of sorts to help me progress as an independent musician and figure out what it was that was missing to be more successful in my music. We set up a time to meet and he very quickly helped me pinpoint many of my weaknesses in songwriting and music performance. What was particularly useful was that he was able to answer my questions and then teach me exercises and technique that helped me become a much better musician while increasing my self confidence in my own music. Even better was the fact that Erik’s knowledge based spanned guitar, piano, and voice, as well as music theory and chord progressions, which has helped me immensely since. Erik was able to help me get past my roadblocks and as a result I’ve become a better songwriter and performer. My experience working with him was totally positive and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him as a vocal, piano, or guitar teacher or coach.”
