Frequently Asked Questions
What's the best age for a child to start drum lessons?
Typically, because of the coordination required, age 8 is the earliest age that will allow the child to get the most out of their lessons.
Do I need a drum set at home when starting lessons?
Ideally, if your child is learning drum set, you should have a set at home. If your child is taking lessons for the school band or orchestral percussion, the minimum you will need is a snare drum and drum pad (rubber mounted playing surface).
What size drum set should I buy for a child beginner?
For younger children, they will need to sit low enough for their feet to touch the pedals while also having the drums low enough and easily reachable. This is mostly determined by the bass drum size. There are a few companies that sell introductory drum sets designed for this purpose.
Any large music store will carry these, especially during the holidays. Electronic drum sets are another viable option. Just be sure that what you’re purchasing is designed to simulate an actual drum set. We are here to help with any questions you may have.
What type of drum set should I have for a beginner, acoustic or electric?
During the beginning stages of lessons, 1-2 years, either acoustic or electric will be fine (see “What size drum set should I buy for a child beginner?” for more information.)
What accessories and books will I need?
All students should have their own sticks (size 5A is recommended for beginners), a metronome, a drum pad (rubber mounted playing surface), a music stand (for home), and a manuscript notebook. For books, the student will need Stick Control, by George Lawrence Stone. Other books we will use will depend largely on the students age and interests (drum set or orchestral studies). This will be discussed during initial lesson.
