Music: The New Medicine for the Brain!
A 60 year old public speaking coach was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. She started by developing leg spasms, but in the end it led to a serious fall in the shower. This woman could barely walk, but then something amazing happened! One day she turned on her shower radio to an oldies station, and she could move her leg with ease!
Music therapy has been a way to treat condition’s like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and depression for years, but now with the help of brain imaging, we are finding out what’s really happening in the brain as the patients listen or better yet play instruments. Beyond improving movement, music can help with speech and also trigger the release of mood-altering brain chemicals and once-lost memories and emotions.
This is seriously cool! Music is so powerful.
